Turku is a band (based in the USA) that plays mostly Turkish music. It's founding members, Ted and Carla Monnich traveled to Istanbul and fell in love with the place. Lately, we've realized that our Istanbul travel tips, photos and blogs had grown to montrous proportions. So, we've launched TurkuGuide.com. We're still re-working everything. Until we get the site re-worked, there is an index of links below. |
Ramadan has started and runs til Sept 30. If you are traveling to Istanbul during this time, here are a few notes... Most restaurants in the city will remain open during the day. There is a nice festival every evening at the Hippodrome with various types of Turkish music, food, and other entertainments. Please be a considerate traveler and don't walk down the street eating and drinking during the day. In some neighborhoods, you will still hear drums in the street just before dawn waking you to have something to eat before the sun rises. In the evening, cannons will go off indicating that it is ok to eat. You will see men running through the street with bread to break the fast. If you are in a shop at the time, the shopkeeper will be wanting to finish up business with you so he can eat. Not everyone participates in the Ramadan fast. Some will tell you that they are "modern Turks", and have no problem joining you for lunch. |
